Singapore Paranormal Investigators (SPI)

    Our History

We have come a long way ...

SPI was first established in June 2001 by founder Kenny and the co-founder Charles Goh (nicked name Abductboy) to conduct serious study, research and investigation into all types of paranormal phenomena.  We had our old office in International Plaza, Singapore.  Kenny who is an ex-professor from NTU with in-depth experience in scientific research, plus Abductboy who are knowledgeable in many paranormal cases especially the local ones, have made SPI arising fast as a well-known legend in Singapore.

During that time, media exposures have helped SPI ever popular to the public due to its unique attitudes in the serious research towards paranormal.  Unfortunately, some ex-members left the team and retired.  Furthermore the economy downturn hit hard in Singapore. The old SPI was then forced to shut down by Kenny for several months. But our passion in paranormal research never died.  Today, SPI is resurrected with great efforts by its original founders and some capable new elite members.

The website opens refreshingly again on the special day of National Day of Singapore, 9 August 2002, celebrating both 37-years of our nation and 1 year anniversary of SPI.  By following the same SPI mission, our new team has become only better than ever, with both professional and ethical practices enforced.  Each member contributes to his best according to his specialty with a sincere heart and a great passion on paranormal research.

SPI featured on Channel 5 Program - Rouge, (Episode 11),
shown on 18 May 2008, Hosted by Eunice Olsen

Next up, Eunice took a ghost walk with the Singapore Paranormal Investigators (SPI) in search of supernatural activities
at two spooky locations in Singapore. After witnessing the spontaneous combustion of a pile of joss paper and visiting a site in which a
baby corpse was once found, Eunice swore off going to any of the two sites alone.

Two SPI investigators, Desmond and Brushup were invited to the studio who shared some of their spooky investigative
stories with the Rouge audience. The investigators also brought with them their investigative equipment such as the temperature gun
and electromagnetic gauge, to explain their use during an investigation. If you’d like to join the SPI or take part in one of their ghost
 walks, log onto

SPI Spooky Walk @ MacRitchie Reservoir
on 28 June 2008, Saturday

Surrounded by broad swamps and lush greenery, MacRitchie Reservoir is a secluded paradise from the bustle of the city. This 12-hectare park around the reservoir contains areas of primary rainforest that is rich in wildlife.

This forested area however was made to be a hotbed of spooky stories by some paranormal fanatics. Some people swear to their every nerve that ghoulish entities were ever seen in the park, some entities hop among the tree tops and others creep in the woods and water. Sightings of Pontianak were frequently rumoured over there.

Are those rumours just a puff of hot air or they have any element of truth? Join SPI on the coming Saturday evening to find out the facts versus fictions.

Soaked in darkness, at night the ambience of the park is unparallel to anywhere else urban. Perhaps it is the dark atmosphere plus an unknown water tomb around (as it is nicked) fuels the fear in those minds that imagine things out. Or something natural is being mistaken or exaggerated as supernatural?

In this field trip, we will rationally look into the possibilities of how insects, turtles, monkeys, monitor lizards, Komodo dragons and other creations of God could have been perceived as boogeyman at night. Experiments will be conducted, as well as encouraging every participant to use our every sensor to carefully scout the surrounding.

Don’t miss out this mythbusting journey that debunks the dark rumours at the MacRitchie Reservoir with SPI.

SPI Investigation and Research (IR) Seminar

Solve the unsolved, exPlain the unexplained, and Investigate into the unknown” is the epitome of what SPI do.

Since year 2001, as a non-profit making paranormal investigation and research organization, Singapore Paranormal Investigators was founded with the following objectives:

To create opportunities for the exchange of ideas on issues exploring paranormal research in our community;

To encourage group participation and discussion promoting better methods and understanding of paranormal research;

To advance the professional and personal development of those who assist in it;

In return, we contribute our knowledge and research results cultivated through SPI to those in need in our community.

Our goal is to gather and collect data that will lead to a better understanding of all paranormal instances such as ghosts and haunting. This special interest group has been to a number of spooky places to try to debunk or explain local urban myths and paranormal activities using high-tech gadgets and research.

In line with these objectives, SPI is committed to delivering regular IR seminars for advancing, sharing and cultivating knowledge. Recent paranormal cases as well as some classic cases from the past would be presented to you – the mysteries and hauntings that happen right in our neighborhood.

Agenda:

The topics include but not limited to our investigation and research on:
Arrow
Residential ghost haunting
Arrow
Famous haunted places
Arrow
Local urban legends
Arrow
Experiments on the paranormal
Arrow
Paranormal research and investigation methodology
Arrow
Gadgets for anomalies detection and scientific analysis

Orb (paranormal)

Example of a photograph featuring an orb

The term orb is the popular name given to typically circular anomalies appearing in photographs. In photography and video, orbs appear to be balls, diamonds, or smears of light with an apparent size in the image ranging from a golfball to a basketball depending on the distance of the dust particle to the lens. Orbs sometimes appear to be in motion, leaving a trail behind them.

There are two main trains of thought regarding the cause of orbs in photographs. The first school sees it as a fairly clear-cut case of flash or ambient light reflection off of dust, particles, insects, or moisture droplets in the air in front of the camera distorted by the digital cameras CCD lens being unable to focus, i.e. they are naturalistic. The opposing school maintains that orbs are paranormal in nature and spirits, i.e. non-naturalistic and ghost like.

Some people claim[weasel word sentence] that 'paranormal' orbs are more likely to appear in certain locales, or are attracted to human actitivities, especially those involving children. The images on Internet fora devoted to orbs are taken in graveyards, backyards, attics, and kitchens, living rooms, as well as bars, convention centers, and city streets – in short, anywhere people may be taking photos. Locations in which orbs are frequently observed are often said[weasel word sentence] to be associated with other 'supernatural activity' and haunting taking place.

As orb photos may demonstrably[weasel word sentence] be gained anywhere, the position of "ghost hunters" who claim orb photos are more common in allegedly haunted areas is significantly weakened. That orb photos can be gained anywhere has, however, been adopted into the position of conspiracy theorists who maintain that orbs are probes/devices being used by an alien culture to monitor human activities.

Orb photos have become so common that some 'ghost hunting organizations' are no longer accepting submissions of them, or specifying that only "exceptional" examples be presented, yet although scientifically debunked as a modern inception with no pre-recorded example prior to the availability of CCD lens (digital camera) technology and it's inferior ability to focus, 'supernatural orbs' make up the predominant presense of 'ghost photos' on the internet. Whether this is due to the fact orbs and light artifacts are easier to generate accidentally and provide a more apt result for the photographer seeking to find controversy, or whether this is for lack of other scientifically credible 'evidence' of the paranormal is left open to debate.

Naturalistic orbs

Naturalistic orbs are most commonly gained using digital cameras and built-in flash. While photographers with archives of photos report having occasionally seen "orbs" in their photos gained with film cameras no evidence has been presented that this is not a modern light artifact error arising in CCD lenses, and the recent rise in reports of orb photos may be directly related to the common availability of digital cameras and associated rise in the number of pictures taken.

It should be noted also that the size of the camera is another consideration in the recent proliferation of orb photos. As film cameras, and then digital cameras, have steadily shrunk in size, reports of "orbs" increased accordingly. As cameras became smaller, the distance between the lens and the built-in flash also shrank, decreasing the angle of reflection back into the lens causing less focus on small light artifacts and thus an orblike appearance.

There are a number of naturalistic causes for orbs in photography and videography.

  • Solid orbs - Dry particulate matter such as dust, pollen, insects, etc.
  • Liquid orbs - Droplets of liquid, usually water, e.g. rain.
  • Foreign material on the camera lens
  • Foreign material within the camera lens
  • Foreign material within the camera body

There are also orbs showing up without any "environmental" explanation i.e. no visible dust, no rain, no moisture, no snowing, no light reflections, etc.[citation needed] However it should be noted that dust particles are present in our environments at all times undetectable to the naked eye.

[edit] Solid orbs

Examples of solid orbs.

[edit] How a solid orb is created

A solid orb, or dust orb, is created because a reflective solid airborne particle, such as a dust particle, is situated near the camera lens and outside the depth of field, in other words out of focus. The pinpoint of light reflected from the dust particle that would be seen if it were at the hyperfocal distance, the distance from the film or charge-coupled device (CCD) to the object being photographed wherby the object is in focus as accurately as possible, grows into a circle of confusion with increasing distance from it.

[edit] How a liquid orb is created

A liquid orb is created because a drop of liquid, most often a rain drop, is situated near the camera lens and outside the depth of field, in other words out of focus. The pinpoint of light reflected from the drop of liquid that would be seen if it were at the hyperfocal distance, the distance from the film or CCD to the object being photographed whereby the object is in focus as accurately as possible, grows into a circle of confusion with increasing distance from it. The appearance of the circle of confusion is modified by aberrations such as chromatic aberration or coma.

Orbs are usually seen through the lens of a camera.

They are also often caused by water or water spots remaining on the negatives during photo processing. Often simply cleaning the negative and reprinting the film will eliminate the orbs.

[edit] Non-naturalistic orbs

Sometimes termed 'spirit orbs', light artifacts are sometimes claimed to exist more densely around certain haunted regions, or claimed to be the spirits of departed loved ones. Orbs of an allegedly paranormal non-naturalistic origin have only come into knowledge over the past decade or so, due to the advent of the CCD and CMOS lenses used by digital cameras which were the first instance where dust and liquids became as visible due to the instantaneous capture method of the photosensitive diodes used, reinforcing skeptics' claims that they are merely a product of the lens.[citation needed]. As with cloud watching the inference of what orbs are are limited to the creativity of the individual, although no evidence linking orbs with the supernatural has ever been presented.
